The main reason for using an email list is to bring customers to your website, where they will hopefully purchase goods and services that you have to offer. However, to bring them to your site, you have to send them enticing and appealing emails.

One way is to buy email lists, but that’s not the best approach. They are too expensive for most small business owners. Another reason is that there are many companies out there that don’t get the email addresses in legitimate ways.

Do some research on companies you are interested in – what is their reputation online? Do they have references that can be checked?

The risk of getting email lists from an unethical company is a serious one. Your emails could be labeled “spam” and your IP address banned from their service. Spam is a four-letter word that has a negative reaction from consumers. This lowers your credibility as a legitimate business.

An opt-in email list (where consumers ask to have information sent) is always a better option for marketing. You have a target audience already in place. One of your most important promotional activities is expanding your opt-in list. The bigger the list, the more sales leads. It’s as simple as that.

People are hesitant to give out their email addresses for good reason. However, if you offer them an e-book, free software, or newsletter they are much more likely to sign up. Offer them high quality information and they will tell their friends, getting the name of your company out there. Make it easy for them to get their free gift. Don’t bury your sign up box at the bottom of a page – ensure they see it when they first go to your website.

You could put the box on the top left-hand corner (apparently where most people look) that says “subscribe to our newsletter here.” Another option is have a box pop up when they are leaving the site, not letting them leave the page without their email address. Put a privacy policy notice near the sign-up box ensuring them that their email addresses will not be sold.

When asking for their email address, simply ask for that and their first name, nothing else. When they become a regular customer, you could ask for more details later – say if you were doing a survey and wanted to get a better idea of their background for marketing purposes.

Offer different options to your site visitors. Some may want to only hear about product updates; others only want to read the newsletter. By doing this you are meeting the needs of different segments of your customers. This is a good marketing tactic and will increase the size of your email list.

Following these tips, your email list should grow and you will be reaching targeted customers, enabling increased exposure and revenue.
