First Things First – Get Subscribers To Open Your Messages To Monetize An Email List
Getting your subscribers is the first obstacle. Here is how to overcome it.
The two most important factors to getting your emails opened are…
- The subject line
- The from line (your sending name)
Honest And Interesting Subjects
Be honest and interesting to have a powerful subject line. Hype should be avoided like the plague. This is a huge List Building Secret…
Simply tell your subscriber why they should open your email and try to make it as interesting as possible.
I have also noticed that little things like using brackets [], quotes “”, or CAPS around and in words can increase open rates. I am not sure why but it does. Here is an example…
Normal Subject Line: Why this free tool works… I didn’t know – did you?
Jazzed Up Subject Line: [FREE TOOL] Why it works… (I didn’t “know” did YOU?)
I highly recommend split testing every broadcast you send. You can try little changes like making one word capitalized or adding brackets around a group of words and see what works best for your list and in your market.
Who Are You Anyways?
Does your subscriber know who you are? If not you are much less likely to get the open.
I don’t know about you but I never open the email from DISCOUNT PHARMACY. This typical spammer ‘from’ name will never get the open.
In general use your name as for the sender’s name. Why?
Imagine a friend sends you an email. You will open it every time, right?
You recognize the name and will read the email without fail. In an ideal world you could become a friend and trusted adviser of your subscribers however this is easier said than done.
Start with introducing yourself to them so they know your name. If they know who you are they are much more likely to stay on your list, open your emails and buy your products.
An easy way to overcome the “who is sending me this email” syndrome is to introduce your self in to your prospect in your welcome email. You can also consider reminding them where they signed up at and who you are in following emails.
Quick Tip: Many email providers allow a quick read of the first sentence of the email without opening the email. You should make the first one or two lines of your email interesting and informational to wet their appetite and get more opens and monetize your email list.
CTR – The Click Is The Goal And How To Get It
Your email should lead people to the click. They opened the email so guide them to learn more by clicking the link.
Here is an example of leading subscribers to click….
“YES! This free tool works and I have been using it for years. What is it?
“It’s the Google keyword tool and it allows you to get more traffic which means sales, subscribers and all around good times. You can see it here:
“==> Insert Super Duper Link”
In the example above I told the reader what the free tool was and what it will do for them. If this interests them at all they will want to see more and they will click on your link.
Also notice that I added an arrow ( ==> ) in front of the link. This will increase your CTR as well.
You Don’t Need To Sell … Unless You Can
Many times an email list owner will try to sell their prospects on whatever they are trying to get people to click on instead of letting the next page do it’s work. In general it just comes off as insincere and hyped up.
Unless you are one of the .01% of people that have proven copy writing skills let the sales page do the selling for you.
Focus on getting the click and avoid sounding like a salesman (a good salesman will not sound like they are selling you something!).
Use A Time Squeeze
A time squeeze is when you urge people to act because your offer will expire, rise in price or some other unwanted result will happen soon. Here is an example.
P.S. This offer is only good for the next 24 hours so act fast to get in before [the price goes up/bonuses are gone/it expires/ect]
Scarcity can be a very over used, and fake, way to get people to click. I recommend only using real scarcity because having an email list is about developing a connection with your subscribers.
If you use false time constraints you could be sabotaging long term wealth for short term income.
If you can use a ‘time squeeze’ go ahead and use it however avoid false claims and lies.
Also, make sure you have a link above the fold. You will always get more clicks if the reader doesn’t need to scroll down.
How To Reduce UnSubscribes
There can be many reasons why readers will unsubscribe. In my testing the overwealming reason why people unsubscribe is because they recieve too many emails.
You might think that sending less emails is the way to get less unsubscribes however you also have to realize that if your prospect gets 100 -500 emails a day and you mail them once a week your response rates will be extremly low.
For this reason it is typical to mail at least twice a week or even every day depending on the niche.
You may also think that this will ruin the relationship you have with your subscriber however I urge you to understand that the best way to build a relationship with a reader is to have them buy and love your product.
If you increase unsubscribes while building a bigger buyers list then 986 times out of 100 it is worth the trade.
1. Quality Of Subscribers Will Vary (Results Not Typical)
Not all subscribers are created equal. As I hinted at earlier a buyer is a much higher quality subscriber than a “freebie seeker.”
One of the best ways to monetize your mailing list is to tell your own product. When you sell your own product you can….
- Build a list of buyers
- Have affiliates and joint venture partners build your list for you
If you are strictly an affiliate marketer you will probably end up treating your high quality subscribers exactly as you will treat your low quality subscribers.
Building a friendly connection as a knowledgeable consultant is important. After someone has bought from you can give them special treatment.
I typically mail my buyers list with tons of great content. You too should treat your customer the best you can.
2. Give Great Content To Keep Your Readers Active
Readers subscribe because they want something. Continue to give them what they want!
If they want to know how to improve their gold swing help them out up – front no strings attached. Why?
Goodwill is a stat you can’t measure in your business yet it is vitally important to running a long term business.
Even if someone buys your product and asks for a refund they have still qualified themselves as a person who will spend money. Just because they didn’t like your initial product doesn’t mean they won’t buy from you again.
If you want to monetize an email list you will need to break through people’s “BS detectors”, become a friend or adviser and truly help them solve their problems. If you can do these three things you will have subscribers who love you.
3. Another Trick To Reduce Unsubscribes Is To Add …
…a footer that tells them where they subscribed, links to free gifts or information about you.
There are a few reasons why this works.
First off people like free gifts, they don’t know who you are and they get tons of emails so they usually don’t know how they subscribed and they don’t understand why they are getting the email.
They think it is spam so you need to win them over and overcome the barriers.
Secondly the further down in the email the unsubscribe link the more effort they need to put in to unsubscribe.
On the other hand if someone is looking for the unsubscribe link or if they don’t want to receive your emails your not going to make much money from them anyways.
Still, a subscriber – even if they don’t buy- has value. They could buy in the future, they could buy a product you recommend, they could click links that make you money and in general you have more influence when you have more buyers.
Free Is The Start Of The Buying Process
Give your subscriber gifts for free. Why? Here is how it can help you monetize and email list…
1. Giving your list something for free allows you to segment your list.
You can build sub lists of subscribers of highly targeted interests.
Have them opt in to a new list for a new gift about a related topic. If you are building a golf list you can send people information about putting or mid game play. Now that you know exactly what they are interested in you can focus your messages.
2. After they sign up to a new list you can have a one time offer to buy a product or service.
By giving away a free gift you are building goodwill and subscriber loyalty, creating lazer targeted sub lists and giving readers a chance to buy. All three of these things make you money.
You can also leverage your list and other people and Build Your List With Adswaps. In essence this is two list owners promoting each other’s list.
The bigger your list the bigger adswap partners you can recruit and the more money you can make.
How To Build Goodwill And Subscriber Loyalty
Find out what your subscribers want and give it to them. Be hype free and real and avoid promoting crappy products or services.
No one likes a salesman so don’t be one. The more genuine you can be the better.
Also, don’t forget to only promote quality. It really helps with an Online Relationship Marketing Strategy.
